The land that the Dungeons sit on was once part of a large complex of monastic buildings belonging to the Friary of the Order of Franciscans, or Greyfriar monks, with only an outer wall remaining.
The building housing the York Dungeons is Grade II listed and was built between 1833-35. It was purpose built as a Technical College for the York Institute of Science, Art and Literature. From 1892 it held the city’s new public library and is now home to the Gallery Nightclub and York Dungeons.
The York Dungeons may make for a ‘horrifying’ day out but there are actual reports of hauntings throughout the building. Three monks are seen walking in a line at the back of the building, which would have once been the gardens of the friary. Visitors have reported hearing whispers and talking believing it to be part of the attraction, only to turn around and see nobody there. Other reports include a little girl called Emily and an old man in blue overalls and a flat cap, believed to be a former caretaker of the building. A contractor working in the building had a terrifying experience when his ladders were pulled from beneath him. People have felt cold breathing on their skin and witnessed strange mists appearing along with hearing growls and strange cries.
