The Viaduct Tavern is a Grade II listed public house and opened in 1869; the same year construction of the Holborn Viaduct was completed. It was styled as a Victorian Gin Palace with ornate fittings and an elaborate decor. Gin Palaces were popular during the early 19th Century when gin was believed to have medicinal purposes, they evolved from small ‘dram shops’ and chemists to these truly spectacular buildings, which didn’t survive but the style itself did. The Viaduct Tavern is a shining example of this.
There have been many claims over the years that the cellar of the Viaduct Tavern contains 5 old cells from the Newgate Prison, or perhaps have been merely modified to look this way, but are more likely to have been storage areas. The Newgate used to stand where the Old Bailey does today, right across the road from the Tavern. It is more generally believed that the Viaduct Tavern stands on the ground of the Giltspur Compter, a debtors’ prison that was demolished before the building we see today was built.
The street the Tavern stands on was actually where public hangings took place until 1868 and a small water feature across the street is believed to be where the hangings took place. There are those that believe some of the condemned prisoners were buried underneath ‘Dead Man’s Walk’, which was a caged walkway between the prison and the court and has led to some of the hauntings in the Tavern.
Employees and visitors have reported a variety of activity throughout the Viaduct Tavern. Lights turn themselves off, doors close and appear to be locked but are easily opened from the other side and strange noises are often heard. People have reported being touched by unseen hands, poltergeist activity has been witnessed and ghostly figures have been seen.
