The Erasmus Darwin House is a Grade I listed building and a writer’s house museum commemorating the life and achievements of Erasmus Darwin’s life. The grandfather of naturalist Charles Darwin was a renowned physician, scientist, inventor, poet and educationalist. The building has also previously served as a residence for cathedral officials and as a women’s shelter.
He purchased the house, which was a medieval half-timbered building, in 1758 and during the following year he converted it to a Georgian town house. His medical practice was based in his house for the next 20 years. He carried out his scientific experiments here (it is said he also carried out public dissections in the cellar), held meetings of the Lunar Society and planned the construction of the Trent and Mersey Canal. Famous faces he invited to his home include Josiah Wedgewood, Matthew Boulton, Benjamin Franklin and James Watt.
There have been many varied reports of paranormal occurrences throughout the building. Doors will often open and close without explanation, the sounds of children laughing and disembodied voices are heard with the sounds of people moving around and unexplainable knocking and banging sounds. Light anomalies have been witnessed along with temperature fluctuations and a distinctive odour of tobacco smoke has been reported.
