Mermaid Inn East Sussex

This is one of England’s oldest inns and was established in 1573 when Queen Elizabeth I visited Rye. It was a well known place for smugglers and a certain group known as the Hawkhurst Gang. It still has many original features like the beams and inglenook fireplace.

Some of the strange things that have been seen at the inn are two smugglers having a duel, a maid in room 5 where she was murdered by smugglers and a lady standing by the fireplace.
