The academy was originally built as a Methodist High School in 1846 by Jerome C Berryman. During the Civil War it was used as a union hospital. The Ursuline nuns brought the property in 1877 and turned it into a school for girls. The last graduating class was in 1970. It was then a convent until 1985 when the nuns moved to St Louis and after this property has become privately owned. The Academy has many uses including, part of the main building is used as a Bed and Breakfast and the chapel, which was built in 1908, is a beautiful place to have your wedding.
The Academy is said to be haunted by some of the former nuns, orbs have also been seen as have strange mists and doors are known to open and shut by themselves.
