The Cock and Bottle York

In 1651 a laboratory owned by George Villiers, the Duke of Buckinghamshire, used to be on this site before it became the small pub we know of today. The Duke was known to be a ladies’ man, and the nursery rhyme Georgie Porgie was written because of him.

He is said to haunt the pub, and in his quieter times is seen to be sitting in a chair by the fire, at other times he said to follow women into the toilets, and that he sometimes goes to stroke them.
